Theatre Technician

About the role

Full-time Theatre Technician at Glendale Community College, providing technical support for music, dance, theatre productions, and special events. 40 hours/week, 12 months/year. Some evenings and weekends required. Works under the direct supervision of the department manager.

What you'll do

• Plan and execute technical theatrical production support (set construction, lighting, audio, video)
• Review scenic plans, lighting/video/audio plots; work from blueprints and renderings; prepare cost estimates and order supplies, equipment, and rentals
• Coordinate with designers and directors on budget and timing; complete work requests
• Inspect, repair, fabricate, and install stage sets and performing arts construction; source props and set pieces
• Install, configure, and maintain theatrical control systems; operate video, sound, and lighting consoles during performances
• Design, implement, and program computerized playback systems for audio/visual/special effects
• Attend technical and dress rehearsals to ensure smooth scene, lighting, audio, and costume execution
• Provide technical expertise and assistance to faculty and students in stagecraft, lighting, and audio courses and labs
• Collaborate with staff, vendors, and contractors; oversee completed work; schedule set strikes after closing performances
• Create and maintain records and reports; may provide work direction to lower-level and student employees

Requirements

• 1 year of college coursework (30 semester units) in theatre arts, technical theatrics, multimedia, or closely related field
• 4 years of technical theater/dramatic production experience in at least one area: set construction, stage rigging, stage lighting, stage audio, or stage video
• Experience with computerized theatrical control systems
• Knowledge of GD&T equivalents for stage: electrical theory, network theory, safety procedures, light design, and theatrical production blueprints

Physical requirements

Walking/standing for extended periods; bending, kneeling, crouching; climbing ladders and scaffolding. Lifting up to 50 lbs. Work involves changing lighting conditions, smoke, and loud noise inside a performing arts theatre or classroom.

Pay

$5,421.58–$6,919.46/month (salary steps 1–6, plus longevity where applicable)

Starting salary: Step 1 ($5,421.58) to Step 3 ($5,977.29) depending on training and experience.
