About the Role
The Engineering & Sciences organization at Northrop Grumman Mission Systems is seeking a Principal or Senior Principal Modeling, Simulation & Analysis (MS&A) Engineer in Woodland Hills, CA. The ideal candidate has a strong background in physics-based modeling, simulation, and data analysis, with experience supporting inertial navigation products through design, verification, and performance characterization.
What You'll Do
- Develop and maintain physics-based models and simulations of inertial navigation systems (INS), including sensors, error sources, and environmental effects
- Perform Monte Carlo analyses, sensitivity studies, and trade-off analyses to assess system performance and margins
- Analyze lab, flight, and field test data to validate models and quantify performance
- Support requirements decomposition with model-based performance predictions and error budgets
- Generate and maintain simulation frameworks/toolchains (MATLAB/Simulink, Python, C/C++) reusable across programs
- Collaborate with systems, hardware, and software teams to integrate models into HIL/SIL environments
- Contribute to test planning by defining model-informed test cases and stress scenarios
- Analyze test/qualification results, perform root cause investigations, and recommend design updates
- Prepare technical documentation, validation reports, and executive-level presentations
- Mentor junior engineers in modeling, simulation, and data analysis methods
- Drive continuous improvement in MS&A processes, tools, and standards
Requirements
Principal level: Bachelor's in STEM + 5 years, Master's + 3 years, or PhD + 1 year.
Senior Principal level: Bachelor's in STEM + 8 years, Master's + 6 years, or PhD + 4 years.
Both levels:
- Demonstrated experience in modeling, simulation, and analysis for complex systems
- Proficiency with MATLAB/Simulink and Python or comparable tools
- Experience processing and analyzing sensor or navigation data sets (IMU logs, flight test data, lab data)
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; excellent written/verbal communication
- U.S. Citizenship; current/active U.S. Government Secret clearance; full-time onsite in Woodland Hills, CA
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's or PhD in Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Applied Mathematics, or related field
- Experience with INS, IMU modeling, navigation algorithms, or related estimation/control systems
- Experience with GNC, Kalman filtering, state estimation, or sensor fusion algorithms
- Experience with HIL/SIL integration and validation
- Experience with C/C++ or Python for algorithm development
- Track record supporting program milestones (SRR, SFR, PDR, CDR)
Schedule
Full-time, onsite in Woodland Hills, CA. Travel: 10% of the time.
Pay & Benefits
Primary Level Salary Range: $114,000.00 - $171,000.00 (Secondary Level Salary Range: $142,200.00 - $213,400.00 for higher-graded fills). Employees may also be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus. Benefits include health insurance, life and disability insurance, a savings plan, company-paid holidays, and paid time off (PTO).
