About the Role
The Associate Counsel/Counsel, Intellectual Property position within the Copyright & Trademark team will provide strategic legal guidance and oversight on IP issues arising from content production, brand development, and global expansion initiatives. This role has a particular focus on supporting the Universal Filmed Entertainment Group, advising business and legal divisions and collaborating closely with internal and external stakeholders to protect and enhance NBCUniversal's IP assets worldwide.
Responsibilities
- Advise and collaborate with creative, business, and legal divisions on trademark, copyright, domain name, and related IP matters, including innovative products and services, global brand launches, high-profile productions, and cutting-edge use cases
- Responsible for clearance of trademarks, titles, character names, and other nomenclature for client businesses and strategic initiatives
- Communicate effectively with stakeholders on complex, multi-layered issues requiring immediate decisions
- Assist with prosecution and enforcement of trademarks and other IP assets, domestically and internationally
- Analyze development, production, and distribution agreements; provide advice regarding copyright and production rights on current and library properties
- Conduct due diligence and advise on IP-related contractual terms for a variety of transactions, including licenses, mergers, acquisitions, and joint ventures
- Collaborate with IP colleagues across regions to support brand protection and enforcement of NBCUniversal brands worldwide
Requirements
- 2+ years of experience (Associate Counsel) or 4+ years (Counsel) in trademark or intellectual property, at a law firm or comparable corporate setting
- JD or LLM degree from an accredited law school
- Must be a member in good standing of the California State Bar, or eligible to register as in-house counsel in California
Preferred
- Outstanding academic credentials; highly motivated self-starter with keen intellectual curiosity
- Excellent communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills
- Sound, practical business judgment; ability to handle large workloads and meet deadlines
- Experience in the entertainment industry preferred
Schedule & Pay
Hybrid — minimum four days per week in Universal City, CA office.
Salary range: Associate Counsel $100,000–$130,000 (bonus eligible) / Counsel $140,000–$170,000 (bonus and long-term incentive eligible)
