Sr. Counsel, Intellectual Property

About the Role

NBCUniversal is seeking a Senior Counsel, Intellectual Property to serve as the primary legal advisor for IP matters for an innovative new initiative. This role requires deep expertise in technology-related IP transactions and the ability to work cross-functionally with legal, engineering, and business teams.

Hybrid: minimum four days/week at Universal City, CA office.

Responsibilities

• Primary legal advisor for all IP matters for the business
• Draft, negotiate, and advise on IP and technology transactions (game engines, creator tools, generative AI, online services, licensing)
• Advise on open-source software policies and trade secret protection
• Develop guidelines for generative AI content creation and use
• Conduct IP and technology diligence for acquisitions, investments, and strategic partnerships
• Develop IP guidelines for content moderation and user-generated content (copyright, trademark, DMCA, rights of publicity)
• Draft and negotiate inbound licensing of third-party IP (characters, music, brands)

Requirements

• J.D. from an accredited law school
• Member in good standing of the California State Bar (or eligible to register as in-house counsel in CA)
• 7+ years of IP and technology transactions experience
• Fluency in content clearance, brand/franchise licensing, copyrights, patents, trademarks, generative AI
• Exceptional issue-spotting, problem-solving, and business judgment
• Ability to collaborate across a large organization and influence outcomes

Preferred

• Experience in video games or interactive entertainment industry
• Experience supporting generative AI content creation
• Prior in-house legal experience at a game publisher, developer, or interactive media company

Pay & Benefits

$175,000–$215,000/yr (bonus and long-term incentive eligible) | Hybrid | Full-time
