About the Role
CSUN's National Center on Deafness seeks a Realtime Captioner to provide Communication Access Realtime Translating (CART) services — real-time, word-for-word text of spoken English — for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing students, faculty, staff, and guests.
What You'll Do
- Provide CART services in classrooms and academic settings, including environmental cues in the transcription
- Supply personal equipment: steno machine, laptop, display monitor, and software
- Research technical terminology and maintain custom software dictionaries
Requirements
- Level 1A: Formal court reporting training; 6–12 months of real-time captioning experience preferred in higher education
- Level 2B: Level 1A requirements plus 2+ years of captioning experience and one recognized certification
- Caption a minimum of 180 WPM with high accuracy
Schedule
Intermittent hours, variable schedule. Temporary renewable appointment (July–June), subject to annual renewal. On-campus — not telecommute-eligible.
Pay
$47.19/hr (RTC I) to $53.09/hr (RTC II); classification range $19.37–$194.60/hour
