LVN II – Panorama City – Nephrology – On Call

Job Summary: Under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse or physician, provides nursing care in accordance with the legal scope of practice and within established standards of care, policies and procedures. Demonstrates quality and effectiveness in work habits and clinical practice and treats co-workers, patients, families and all members of the health care team with dignity and respect.

Representative Duties: - Performs patient care functions within scope of competency, considering age-related needs, per physician/health care professional orders and established protocols - Assists medical personnel with special procedures, minor surgical procedures and diagnostic exams - Assesses and monitors patient condition and notifies the physician/health care professional for disposition - Prepares and administers medications as directed by physician order - Maintains equipment and supplies; identifies and arranges for equipment needing repair - Applies aseptic technique and infection control procedures - Monitors patient flow and assigns/directs ancillary personnel as needed - Provides medical information and education to patients; documents patient information, assessments and nursing procedures

Patient/Care Procedures: - Explains examinations, tests and procedures to patients; instructs patients on general health and self-care - Reviews and clarifies physician orders with the patient; instructs patient in use of home equipment - Administers first aid, applies/removes dressings, applies basic orthopedic devices as ordered - Executes treatments including urinary catheterization, bladder irrigations, suction procedures, throat irrigations and enemas - Initiates emergency procedures (including basic CPR) and provides emergency patient treatment; responds to Code Blues - Monitors and records patient vital signs; monitors patients for bleeding - Administers inhalation therapy; participates in development of nursing care plans - Performs surgical preps; prepares and positions patients for procedures and physical exams - Rinses, cleans and sterilizes instruments and equipment; monitors supply of oxygen and gas tanks - Completes lab/radiology requisitions and specialized test forms; notifies appropriate personnel of abnormal lab results - Obtains specimens from patients (urine, stool, etc.); performs venipuncture and finger sticks for blood samples; prepares specimens for lab analysis - Performs urine tests, vision screening, routine diagnostic tests and skin tests - Assists as a member of the surgical team, including with endotracheal intubations, tissue specimens/biopsies and proctological procedures
