About the Role
The Art Director is responsible for establishing and leading the overall visual vision for assigned projects at Universal Creative, ensuring that brand standards and creative intent are translated into compelling guest experiences at Universal Studios Hollywood. This role directs the artistic style, visual elements, and design development of projects from concept through execution.
The Art Director transforms desired moods, messages, concepts, and ideas into impactful imagery, utilizing tools such as AutoCAD, 3D software, and Adobe Creative Suite to develop drawings, models, and design documentation.
Responsibilities
- Develop visual design direction and define design elements of the assigned project affecting the guest experience — through sketches, illustrations, models, composite imagery, and image research documentation. Project types range from placemaking environmental elements, retail and food kiosks, show interior and exterior, landscape, and hardscape
- Responsible for the development, documentation, coordination, and technical execution of the creative intent
- Collaborate with internal talent and external vendors to execute the desired vision; direct art-related vendors and any scenic scope requiring art direction
- In collaboration with the Design Director, act as design “vision-keeper” for the project, maintaining a cohesive design through all phases of design and development
- Create and present project materials to internal and external audiences to communicate project concept, content, and status
- During construction, develop in-field solutions and follow-up documentation; ensure project completion of art, finishes, and materials specifications
- Act as project liaison with internal and external partners, licensors, and intellectual property partners as needed
- Understand and actively participate in Environmental, Health & Safety responsibilities
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Theater, Art, Film, or Architecture required; Master’s degree preferred
- 12+ years of production design and field experience based on Universal Creative standards
- Experience designing entertainment for world-class theme parks or related industries; or equivalent education and experience
- In-depth knowledge of color theory, art history, scenic painting techniques, sculpture, architecture, perspective, fabrication, and technical disciplines
- Ability to communicate complex artistic ideas through written, visual, and presentation materials
Pay & Benefits
- Salary: $130,000 – $160,000/yr (bonus eligible)
