West Hills Council Opposes SB 79 Setback Plan

July 7, 2026 · Neighborhood Councils

The West Hills Neighborhood Council voted 10 to 0 to send a letter opposing SB 79 setback reductions to the Los Angeles City Planning Department at its June 11 meeting.

One board member abstained.

The council's letter states that reducing rear and side yard setbacks to four feet is neither required nor necessary to achieve SB 79's housing density goals.

The letter notes that studies show the density permitted under SB 79 can be achieved without decreasing existing setbacks.

The West Hills Neighborhood Council has officially documented its opposition to SB 79 joining a broad coalition, the letter states.

The council's letter requests that the city provide by-mail notification to all property owners and tenants affected by SB 79's implementation.

The letter asks that the SB 79 implementation ordinance be tied to any future revisions, postponement, or repeal of the state law.
