Sunland-Tujunga Votes to Oppose Street Light Ballot

June 25, 2026 · Neighborhood Councils

The Sunland-Tujunga Neighborhood Council voted 11 to 0 to send a letter opposing a City of Los Angeles ballot that would levy an assessment on property owners for street lighting.

The Bureau of Street Lighting is proposing an update to the existing Street Lighting Assessment within the City of Los Angeles.

The department has not received dedicated city funding for many years and faces ongoing maintenance costs from copper theft, the minutes state.

A non-response to the ballot would automatically count as a yes vote, though the council president said she had information that this would not be enforced.

Board member Karen Moran said she expected to pay $125 for two aluminum post lights on her corner property.

She objected to language that would allow the department to raise rates in the future with no restrictions, the minutes state.

The minutes note that several neighborhood councils are opposed to the ballot.
