Sunland-Tujunga Flags Tujunga Dump Toxic Soil Risk
August 13, 2026 · Neighborhood Councils
A community member near the Tujunga dump told the Sunland-Tujunga Neighborhood Council at its June 10 meeting that bulldozers are grading piles of dirt at the site.
Karen von Gunten, who lives near the dump, said the grading is disturbing toxic dirt and could spread toxins during a wind event, the minutes record.
Council president Lydia Grant said the city was supposed to have placed clean dirt over the toxic layer, but added that proving this occurred is "likely not possible."
Grant said past soil testing by the council showed toxic materials, while separate county testing did not find the same results.
The minutes note the council is unsure what further action it can take on the issue.
