Sunland-Tujunga Opposes Removing Animal Food From City Budget
June 24, 2026 · Neighborhood Councils
The Sunland-Tujunga Neighborhood Council voted 12-0 on June 10, 2026, to oppose a proposed Los Angeles city budget provision that would eliminate a dedicated funding line for animal food, according to the meeting minutes.
The provision is in Council File 26-0600, the city's proposed budget for fiscal year 2026 to 2027.
The proposal also sharply reduced funding for medical supplies at city animal shelters, the minutes state.
Animal advocates and rescue organizations have raised serious concerns, the minutes note, warning that shelters could be forced to rely almost entirely on private donations and the Animal Welfare Trust Fund to feed animals in their care.
The council's vote placed its opposition on record.
