Neighborhood Council Rejects Animal Shelter Food Cuts

June 19, 2026 · Neighborhood Councils

The Sunland-Tujunga Neighborhood Council voted 12 to 0 at its June 10, 2026 meeting to formally oppose a provision in Council File 26-0600 that would eliminate a dedicated General Fund allocation for animal food in city shelters and severely reduce funding for medical supplies.

Animal advocates and rescue organizations had warned the board that city shelters would be forced to rely almost entirely on private donations and the Animal Welfare Trust Fund just to feed animals in their care.

Board member Royal made the motion and board member Schmidt seconded it.

The final count was 12 in favor and 0 opposed, with 5 members absent from the 17-member board.
