Sunland-Tujunga Opposes Cutting LA Animal Shelter Food

The Sunland-Tujunga Neighborhood Council voted 12-0 in June to oppose a provision in the city's proposed budget for the 2026-27 fiscal year.

The provision is in Council File 26-0600, the official Los Angeles City budget proposal.

The file would eliminate a dedicated line item for animal food at city shelters and severely reduce funding for medical supplies, the minutes state.

Animal advocates and rescue organizations raised alarms that city shelters would be forced to rely almost entirely on private donations and the Animal Welfare Trust Fund to feed animals in their care.

The council's motion called for disapproving the provision that removes the dedicated animal food budget and the cuts to medical supplies.
