Sunland-Tujunga Votes to Limit Backyard Home Size
September 11, 2026 · Neighborhood Councils
The Sunland-Tujunga Neighborhood Council voted 13 to 0 on September 9 to support an ordinance limiting accessory dwelling units to 1,200 square feet.
The minutes note that an amendment made the size requirement ambiguous and some units have since been built to 3,500 square feet instead of the 1,200 square feet formerly required.
The ordinance would stop future oversized units but would not affect ones already approved by the city.
Council President Lydia Grant said the change puts boundaries on the size that the city can enforce going forward.
The motion was made by Treasurer Carol Hutchinson and seconded by board member Jon von Gunten.
