Studio City Votes to Eradicate Giant Reed Plants
July 28, 2026 · Neighborhood Councils
The Studio City Neighborhood Council voted 15 to 0 to ask Councilmember Raman and city, county, and governmental agencies to immediately eradicate Giant Reed from Studio City.
Giant Reed, known scientifically as Arundo donax, grows in groves along the Los Angeles River in Studio City.
Committee representatives and Scott Mandell described the plant's invasive character, its water and fire impacts, and the risk of it spreading downstream.
The request also asks for a report back on timelines, jurisdiction, and status.
Board member Barry Johnson suggested checking for Giant Reed growth on the north side of the river and, if found, notifying the representative for that jurisdiction.
